May I be happy, and know the root of happiness

May I be safe, from inner and outer harm

May my heart be full of love and peace

And may my life unfold with ease.

May they be happy, and know the root of happiness

May they be safe, from inner and outer harm

May their hearts be full of love and peace

May their lives unfold with ease.

May they be happy, and know the root of happiness

May they be safe, from inner and outer harm

May their hearts be full of love and peace

May their lives unfold with ease.

May all beings be happy, and know the root of happiness

May all beings be safe, from inner and outer harm

May the hearts of all beings be full of love and peace

May the lives of all beings unfold with ease.

I say this prayer every day. It is a lovingkindness practice from the Buddhist tradition, and is used by people of all faiths. Beyond that, though, it feels good and right and true to me. And there are endless variations, something for everyone.

It is said first for yourself, then for those you love – both close to you and further from home. The third round is for those you have difficulty with – this can cover anything from someone at the grocery store who was rude to Bin Laden. And then, finally, you say it for all beings, a way of including everyone.

Yes, it can be hard to utter these words for those who I have tremendous difficulty in accepting or understanding. But if I am to find peace, if we all are to find peace, this is a great place to start. And over time, I have come to see that in every person on this earth, there is good. I say this prayer in thanks and in hope, for all of us. I say it for you. Every day.

Namaste.
